Do you love your Android that comes with your device but you would prefer to choose what apps should be installed by default ? Do you need one app for a task ? Then get ready for a new kind of a ROM…
One of the best thing that happed to the tech industry is the involvement of Google with Linux that brought us the best mobile operating system called Android. The best part was yet to happen, when Google started the AOSP project, releasing every version (except 3.x) of the Android under an Open SOurce License.
The above, had excited developers but mostly the hackers around the world. The results where some of the best custom made Android ROMs ready for install e.g. Cyanogen Mod, MiUi, Oxygen ROM etc. But yet there was no (not that I know) ROM that respects the stock rom and just removes all the “extra” apps that nobody asked the users if they wanted those apps.

An Android hacker, well known here in Greece and a friend of mine, Chris K. owner of www.doctorandroid.gr told me that he was planing to release an Android Rom based on the philosophy of the iQunix desktop OS. Finally after some months of planing, testing, flashing and restarting from scratch, the first release of Dr Android ROM is ready. Also, as I stated on a previous post, in the following days Dr Android ROM will be part of Utappia Portfolio. I am an exited user of Dr Android ROM and let me introduce you some interesting aspects of this awesome ROM
What offers…
The very first release is only compatible with Nexus S. But more will eventually will be built upon some basic principles:
- Stability: No Alpha, beta or RC… just the stable… no kidding
- Optimization: Performance is none negotiable
- More Room for Apps: By removing the default apps and keeping only what is needed, makes room for you to choose what should be installed
- Tweaks: Even Google, may make some wrong choices…. Dr Android just cures them…
Lets elaborate some more on the above statements
Stability: Dr Android ROM, will use the stock rom as a base operating system, that comes with your phone so that you will be sure that it just works. It will not alter the appearance and internals in any dangerous way.
Optimization: Often the stock ROM is really “FAT”… Dr Android ROM surgically removes any fat that will decrease your phone’s performance.
More Room for Apps: There are always better apps available from the stock ones that come by default with your phone. Dr Android ROM removes those apps and lets you decide what to install.
Tweaks: Android that comes by default has room for some tweaks that will change your perspective for how good is your phone.

Download Dr Android 4.0.4
For this release you will need a compatible device:
- Nexus S (GSM)
- Unlocked Boot Loader
- Rooted device
- Download: Nexus S “Android ROM”
To install it,
- BACK UP YOUR FILES
- add the downloaded update-signed.zip to your SD/External memory
- reboot to recovery
- Wipe
- Install zip from sd card
- Reboot system now
- First boot will be slow
- After you add your settings and boot to your home screen DO A SECOND REBOOT
