ucaresystem core 4.2.3 : One installer for Ubuntu and Debian based distributions

ucaresystem core v4.2.3

I am pleased to announce that ucaresystem core version 4.2.3 has been released with some cool features. Now either you have an Ubuntu or Debian based distribution, you just need only one deb package installer.

Why bother ?

Here is the thing… I love creating automas (bash scripts). So until now there were 3 ways to get and install ucaresystem-core:

  • On Ubuntu or Debian based distributions, you have the option to download a deb package and install it with your software center. But then, you would have to download e new deb package and install it every time I release a new version.
  • On Ubuntu based distributions you also have the option to manually add the PPA with add-apt-repository to your system via terminal, then install it. This way you do a tiny bit manual work but then you get new versions automatically whenever they are released
  • But If your distribution is based purely on Debian and you need those automatic updates for new versions, then you would have to manually add the appropriate and compatible repository in your source.list.d folder, import the signing keys and then install it and get the updates for new versions.

I though about this procedure and I had to do something to unify this “mess”.

So with the version v4.2.3, ucaresystem-core is being released as a deb package for anyone who has never installed it. This way :

  • You download a deb package and install it just by double clicking it
  • It checks for the name of your distribution and then adds the correct repository accordingly
  • If the repository already exists it will skip adding it again.

Pretty cool ha ?. If you already have the PPA from a previous version, you have nothing to do. You already have the latest version. Just see for your self with:

sudo ucaresystem-core -h

If you are a first comer or you need ucaresystem core on a new installation, go grab the deb package from the ucaresystem Downloads page.

  1. Hi, I am using Linux Mint and the latest update did not finish, I got this pop-up:
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/ucaresystem-core_4.2.3_all.deb: subproces dpkg-deb –control gaf een foutwaarde 2 terug
I an not that familiar with computer English but I assume I am missing ucaresystem-core 4.2.2
    My current version is 4.2.1

  2. Good morning, what if I just install the latest version? Or should the old version be removed first and if yes how do I remove the old version?

    1. Lets do this the right way.

      1) first run the following to completely uninstall ucare:

      sudo ppa-purge ppa:utappia/stable

      2) Then run the following to see if there is something left behind that starts with the name utappia*

      ls /etc/apt/sources.list.d/

If get a result with file names that start with utappia, you can delete theme with

      sudo rm /etc/apt/sources.list.d/utappia*

      3) Now that we have cleaned everything go and download the latest version and install it.

      Everything should work perfectly now

  3. Sorry, no luck, there is no utappia left in the list but the new installation won’t complete, basically the same massage referring to the first fault:

dpkg-deb: fout: in archief ‘/home/mint/Downloads/ucaresystem-core_4.2.3_all.deb’ komt element ‘control.tar.xz’ voortijdig voor ‘control.tar.gz’; er wordt opgegeven
dpkg: fout bij verwerken van archief /home/mint/Downloads/ucaresystem-core_4.2.3_all.deb (–install):
subproces dpkg-deb –control gaf een foutwaarde 2 terug
    Fouten gevonden tijdens behandelen van:

  4. Having the same issue:

The following packages will be upgraded:
1 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 5,096 B of archives.
After this operation, 18.4 kB disk space will be freed.
    Get:1 http://ppa.launchpad.net/utappia/stable/ubuntu/ trusty/main ucaresystem-core all 4.2.3 [5,096 B]
    Fetched 5,096 B in 0s (14.6 kB/s)
dpkg-deb: error: archive ‘/var/cache/apt/archives/ucaresystem-core_4.2.3_all.deb’ has premature member ‘control.tar.xz’ before ‘control.tar.gz’, giving up
dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/ucaresystem-core_4.2.3_all.deb (–unpack):
subprocess dpkg-deb –control returned error exit status 2
    Errors were encountered while processing:
    E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

  5. Mint as well Nicolas? I noticed you mention a PPA Ubuntu, but on my Ubuntu laptop 4.2.3 goes very well.

  6. After investigation, I have found that this is a known bug for Trusty and Precise based Ubuntu distros (like *buntu 14.04 and Linux Mint 17.x)

    Here is the bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dpkg/+bug/1730627

Please go there, and click “This bug afects me”. This way the bug gets higher priority thus it will be fixed sooner.

If I find a workaround, I will push a new version.

I have submitted on your behalf , a bug report here https://github.com/Utappia/uCareSystem/issues/9 where I will be updating any news about the issue

      1. Thanks, Salih! For me it is no major problem, I will be patient.

Hi, now I have the tool in the application menu now, 4.3.0
So from my point of view the problem is solved.
